The Bangladesh national football team is the national team ofBangladesh and is controlled by theBangladesh football fedaration. It is a member of the AFC. The side has yet to qualify for a FIFA World cup tournament. They were dismissed in the first round of their onlyAsian cup appearance to date in1980, and have once been South Asian champions once, defeating the Maldives in the final via penalties, as hosts in 2003. As is the case elsewhere on the subcontinent, top-level footballin Bangladesh is played somewhat in the shadow of the country's test cricket team. The team was founded in 1972, and joined FIFAin 1974.
